LIONS CLAIM LIGHTNING HONORS

The Narooma Lions have claimed honors at this years Lightning Cup at the Tathra Country Club. The Lions came into the 2017 edition coming off a fourth place finish in season 2016 whilst also showing they can handle the altered conditions with a second place finish in 2016’s Lightning Premiership.

The Lions went through the preliminary rounds undefeated as they claimed victories against Eden, Bermagui and Merimbula to face a Tathra side who had claimed wins against Pambula 1 and 2 and defeat to Bermagui.

In the final, the contest was tight for the duration of the match before key recruits Jason Sailuma and Simon Mackie combined to give the Lions their first senior silverware since their 1986 SCAFL premiership. With a final score of Narooma 8.3-51 to Tathra 6.1-37 the result shows that the Lions will be highly competitive in season 2017.

In the women’s division, the level of play on display was fast and clean with the competition coming along way in just over a season. 2017 saw the first action for the Merimbula Diggers women’s side with the Diggers and Bega Bombers set to join the women’s division in 2017.

On the state of play it is evident that the Tathra Sea Eagles and Eden Whalers will be the teams to beat again in 2017 although Pambula and Narooma will be hot on their heels having extended their squads for 2017.
